H. Spencer Young, born in Cleveland, Ohio, is a New York-based contemporary artist and filmmaker, with an interdisciplinary, lens-based, research-driven practice. He investigates drawing, painting, performativity, digital art, and all the capabilities of modern and legacy technologies.
Spencer has a B.A. in Visual Media with a minor in Cinema Studies from The American University in Washington, D.C., where his narrative thesis film won the American Visions juried competition.
Young challenges the norms of traditional photography, long considered the faithful representation of reality, in favor of a more subjective way of seeing the world. Young plays on the notion of reality and perception.
Spencer’s commissioned films and music videos have been premiered by W Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, Fact Magazine, The Atlantic and many others.
